PCTs fail to appoint nurses to their boards

The worst region is the South West in which just 43% of the PCTs have an executive director with voting rights on the board.

Dr Peter Carter, RCN chief executive and general secretary, said: ‘Nurses spend more time with patients than any other health professional, so it makes sense for them to be a key part of the decisions which impact on the care that patients receive.

Paediatric nurses have double recommended caseload

Its report shows that some PDSNs in PCTs look after more than 150 children, compared with the recommended 70.

The charity says that such a large case load does not allow nurses the necessary time to help children manage their diabetes and give them individual advice and support.

The report also shows that the PDSN caseload in 35% of PCTs has increased since 2007 and less than 7% of PCTs have improved their PDSN caseload.

Nurses in line for compensation over false abuse allegations

At present, those facing such accusations are placed on the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) and Protection of Children Act (POCA) lists before their guilt has been established.

Many are only cleared after spending a year or more barred from work while they wait for their case to be heard.

But, in a test case this week, the Law Lords unanimously ruled that placing workers on such black lists was in breach of the European Read more »
