The new Smokefree campaign focuses on teenagers concerns about their parents’ future due to the harmful effects of smoking.
An NHS Stop Smoking Services survey of 400 children aged 11- to 15-year-olds whose parents smoked found that 46% were more worried about parents’ smoking than anything else.

The return of diseases that were previously eradicated is an emerging public health emergency.
Minnesota is currently dealing with an outbreak of Haemophilus influenzae, a disease that should have been eradicated with the appropriate vaccine. There were 5 confirmed cases, with 3 children not vaccinated against the disease.
A 7-month old infant tragically died, becoming the first Haemophilus fatality in the state since 1991.

The 8.7m advertising campaign has been developed by M&C Saatchi and Aardman Animations. It focuses on the effect that fat can have on children’s health, with the slogan ‘Eat well, move more, live longer’.
In addition to television and print advertising, the campaign will also run on bus stops and in supermarkets. Tesco, Asda and the Co-operative Group are running events to tie in with the campaign.

A total of 18.6% of boys and girls in year six, aged 10-11, are obese. When they start secondary school in reception, aged 4-5, 9.6% are obese.
The proportion of children who are overweight remains broadly constant, with 13% overweight in reception, and 14.3% in year six.
